USN Aviation Boatswain Fuels Exam Prep
USN Aviation Boatswain's Mate — Fuels (ABF) NWAE Study Guide
The Aviation Boatswain's Mate — Fuels (ABF) rating is responsible for every drop of JP-5 that reaches a Navy aircraft. ABF Sailors operate the ship's aviation fuel system — the pump rooms, filter/separators, service tank gauges, fueling stations, and the below-deck piping that moves JP-5 from storage tanks to the flight deck. They also run the fuel farms aboard LHA/LHD/LPD/CVN ships and at shore aviation fuel facilities.
Flight-deck ABFs wear purple shirts ('grapes') and operate the fueling hoses and pressure refueling nozzles on a hot flight deck. Typical billets are V-4 Division aboard big-deck amphibs and carriers, Expeditionary Logistics Support Groups, and shore fuels divisions at NAS Jacksonville, NAS Lemoore, NAS Whidbey, and OCONUS sites.
NWAE exam structure
The Navy-Wide Advancement Exam for ABF is 150 multiple-choice questions, 2.5 hours, given in March (E-4/5/6) and September (E-4/5/6). The exam score combines with PNA points, awards, performance evaluation average, and service-in-paygrade to produce the Final Multiple Score.
Rating Bibliographies (Bibs)
NAC Pensacola publishes the ABF bib each cycle. Coverage emphasizes NAVAIR 00-80T-109 (fueling), MIL-STD-3004 (quality surveillance), and the ship's aviation fuels bill. Always pull the current bib before you start — the quality-surveillance sections rotate test emphasis cycle to cycle.
What to study
- NAVEDTRA 14313 (ABF Rate Training Manual) — JP-5 properties, system components, quality surveillance
- NAVAIR 00-80T-109 — aircraft refueling/defueling, hot refueling, helicopter in-flight refueling (HIFR), unrep fueling
- MIL-STD-3004 — contamination limits, particulate/free-water thresholds, sampling frequency, B/2 test
- JP-5 characteristics — flash point 140 F minimum, freeze point, conductivity additive (SDA), fuel system icing inhibitor (FSII)
- Filter/separator operation — differential pressure limits, fuller's earth filter elements, go/no-go criteria
- Ship's aviation fuels bill — casualty control (ruptured line, fire, spill), general quarters manning of fuel stations
- Quality surveillance sampling — clear-and-bright, millipore, AEL (Aqua-Glo/Aquacount), hydrometer, API gravity corrected to 60 F
- Hose, pressure refueling nozzle, and D-1 valve operation — CCR (closed-circuit refueling), D-2 over-wing nozzle
- Safety and environmental — bonding/grounding, PPE, OCONUS fuels, spill response (SORM)
Common pitfalls
The big one is the quality-surveillance math: particulate limits in mg/L, free water in ppm, and conductivity in pS/m trip up even experienced fuels Sailors. Another pitfall is confusing JP-5 (Navy shipboard) with JP-8 (USAF) or Jet A — flash points and additives differ. Do not skip the sampling frequency tables — NWAE loves 'how often do you run a B/2 test' questions.
Study strategy using MMCE.app
MMCE.app's adaptive engine will find your specific weak area — whether that's additive chemistry, filter/separator differential pressure limits, or CCR nozzle operation — and keep drilling until you're solid. Use the AI tutor on every flagged sampling question to lock down the numeric limits. A full-length timed 150-question practice test the week before exam day will dial in your pacing.
Career progression
ABFs advance into Flight Deck Fuels Supervisor, V-4 Division LPO, and eventually Chief Petty Officer / ABFCM running the ship's entire aviation fuels department. CWO-732 (Ship's Boatswain, aviation option) is the warrant path. Civilian transition is strong — airport fueling supervisors, FBO fuels managers, and defense fuels contractors (DLA Energy) all value ABF experience.
