Panama Canal postpones Neopanamax draft reduction

The Panama Canal has postponed a planned reduction in the maximum authorized draft for vessels using the Neopanamax Locks.

As a result, vessels will continue to operate under the existing 14.63-meter (48-foot) Tropical Fresh Water (TFW) draft limit.

The Panama Canal had previously planned to reduce the maximum draft to 14.48 meters (47.5 feet) from 1 October 2026.

Gatun Lake conditions prompt decision

The Panama Canal said the decision followed its latest assessment of Gatun Lake water levels and weather projections.

Maintaining the current draft will provide greater certainty for shipping lines when planning voyages and vessel deployments.

The Canal said it will continue to monitor water conditions and adjust operating requirements when necessary.

Any future changes affecting vessel draft limits will be communicated to customers in advance.

The Panama Canal has used draft restrictions and other operational measures to manage water availability during periods of challenging conditions.
